According to the Gospel of Mark, “Everyone is searching for Jesus.” But in our searching, live out the Three Great Loves: the love of children, the love of neighbor, and the love of creation. I can imagine each of you, and our congregation being fully illuminated more often, closer to God more often, and understanding that when it seems as if something is blocking the light of Christ from reaching us it is only very temporary, like an eclipse. We spend so much time “searching for Jesus,” when Jesus is right here. We spend so much time wondering what Jesus would have us do, when we know exactly what Jesus would do: Do justice, love kindness and walk humbly. Love God and love neighbor. Feed the hungry, clothe the naked, heal the sick, visit the prisoner, care for the widow and the one that wanders from place to place through life.
To the congregation and our new leaders I say, YES! Search for Jesus! But also, YES! Be the Light of the World! Be the present, real, active Light of the World! Jesus, the Jesus we search for, the Jesus we meet at the communion table, THAT Jesus has said, “You are the Light of the World!” The Jesus that drives us to say: “No matter who you are, or where you are on life’s journey, you are welcome here!” To light the path for all people who are searching for Jesus, to follow that light to this place. To be the Light and invite, invite ALL: from Pancakes at our Fastnacht to children at After-school Crew, from the Men’s Breakfast to Sunday worship. We come to the communion table searching for Jesus, and we find Jesus in the breaking of the bread. Be not afraid to be the Light of Christ to the world: a call to love children, to love neighbor, and to love creation.
God’s blessings on your week.
